EVALUATION ACTIVITY 1

In order to develop our media product(credit sequence) we began by looking at the credits of sherlock homes and used some of those ideas to transfer into our own product.
If i had more time to edit our video i would have liked to have put after effects in, this would have really made the credit sequence that extra bit better.

We used the green room to shoot our credit sequence, at the start i was against this and wanted to use the black room as it would be more typical but the others wanted this green room as it had more space. In the end i like the effect the green room has as it's quite trippy and weird and makes you think what kind of character has a green room. I also think the way Johnson walks in the credit sequence shows some of his personality.

I liked adding our key frames to our credit sequence and the effects i made by doing that, also the still cartoon images i made on photoshop.
I think because in our credit sequence Johnson is the only character we decided to use a soundtrack that would show his feelings and emotions. I think i found a soundtrack that creates this effect, but if you were to listen to it without knowing the music were his feeling you would think it sounded random.

I think the opening sets the story up well and you can find out a lot about the character Johnson from the props we used. Johnson likes his hats as you see when he puts one at the end of our credit sequence, i think that will be a big part in our remake and also quite a witty part a bit like Indiana Jones.

Here are 9 frames from our title sequence.

Frame 1: I chose this frame of the edited image of the match being lit because

Frame 2: This frame i chose because it's just about to go into the edit still but it's still in modern day video, it has a trippy effect of a face coming through the paper that also gives of a mysterous effect to the credit sequence,

Frame 3: This is a still of the setting of the desk, i think the desk shows Johnsons(our modern day doctor marlowe like character) kind of personality, it has a blank book that he flicks through which i think shows a kind of mystery.

Frame 4: This is a close up of the hand with blood on, i think this is a very important bit in our credit sequence as it introduces the horror aspect of our remake.

Frame 5:This still is just before i flick the needle, i think this is also an important scene because it shows the needle in my hand and shows that i will be injecting it by giving it a flick. This creates a bit of tension.

Scene 6: This is the scene right before Johnsons injects himself with the needle, i picked this as it's important to see that he's the one who's going to be experiencing the effects of the drug he's injecting into himself as he walks out the door and the remake starts.

Frame 7, This is a frame of Johnsons Ipod with the song 'Monster' on it, perhaps the song is getting him in the mood after injecting himself or perhaps he just likes that modern day kind of music, i shall leave that up to the viewer

Frame 8: I chose this edit still of him throwing his jacket on because i think it shows that the weather outside is going to be cold and the kind of clothes he choices to wear...quite abstract clothing for someone his age.

Frame 9: This is an edit still of our title, we used a standard font in photoshop called ‘Handwriting’ i quite like the font we used, yet i think we could have found a font which was like this but also gave of a bit more of a horror effect, perhaps a bit of blood dripping off every other letter or something along those lines.

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 2

Our media product represents a social group such as drug users. By using an image of an ipod this also indicated a younger generation.
I think people who like modern day horror films and have a good knowledge or different types of drugs and the effects they have would also like to see this as they might find it interesting.

In the movie Thirteen, Tracy Louise Freeland (Evan Rachel Wood) is an emotionally unstable and rebel teenager, this made me think of of her as being a good comparison to Johnson(updated Dr. Marlowe character in our remake). I see Johnson as a bit messed up in the head, has some issues and is there for injecting himself trying to experiment on drugs to make him feel better.

In the film Thirteen Tracy is influenced to drugs and robbery, this is the kind of thing i see Johnson doing in our remake of Imonster, obviously drugs are an important aspect in our remake.

EvALUATION ACTIVITY 3 continued

Hello and welcome to the directors review with myself....stephen taylor.
First

funding is also very important when it comes to the making of a film. For our remake of imonster i think the funding association microwave would be ideal.
microwave give out 100grand to new directors giving them the breakthrough and the chance to make there film.
Microwave would only grant you the funding if they think your film has enough potential. To do this you first send them a script of your film and then once approved you receive funding from the company.

I think microwave is a great way for new directors to get there names out there by being given that amount of money

These are a few newer films that have been produced with support and funding from Microwave Film London,

  • Shifty by Eran Creevy (Film London Microwave 2008)
  • Mum & Dad by Steven Sheil (Film London Microwave 2008)
  • Derek by Isaac Julien (Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network 2008)
  • I think our film is quite like the film shifty as it's about  a young crack cocaine dealer in London who sees his life quickly spiral out of control when his best friend returns home.

there are some key features in the opening credits of our remake of imonster. one of my favourites being the bloody arm you see as  johnson(our modern day doctor marlowe) opens to the cupbaord to get the drug that he has been working on and expirmenting with.

Another feature i like about our opening credits are the edited stills i created on photoshop.
thankyou for listening to the directors view and most importantly watching our movie.

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 4

People who play video games, single who have a lot of time on there hands and love to watch all kinds of science fiction and horror movies.
Age would range between 19-25

This is a drawing of our target audience member, he's wearing a suit jacket with a T-shirt got from a charity shop around.
He likes to drink but also listens to a range of music from the Sex Pistols to Abba.
His Favourite TV program is total emergency(traffic program) but also enjoys a bit of robot wars.
He likes to go for walks up the street and has no job so has a lot of free time to watch movies.
Our media product represents a social group such as drug users. By using an image of an ipod this also indicated a younger generation.I might use a website owned by News Corporation, or i could use a more mainstream route.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?I have learnt a lot about technologies from the process of making this video, such as how much work goes into shooting just one shot. For example all the story boards made for a 5minute shot then all the work that goes behind that.

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 3

production company is a company usually responsible for physical production of new media, perfoming arts, film, radio or television program.
The company could also be totally responsible for the funding for the production they may accomplish this through an intermediary.

A production company could be a small company, selling its product to a film studio or presenting it at a theatrical venue, or, in the case of film and television, it may be the studio itself.

film distributor is a  company or individual that is responsible for releasing films to the public.

A distribution company that i think might be interested in our remake would be myspace tv a social networking site than could release our remake.
If that was to fail we could try going to Zone Horror who are a TV channel who release low budget films as well as giving new directors the chance to screen their own film.

Or if we couldn't get a distribution company at all we would put our film straight on the internet or Film Four to get our names out there, then the next film we'd make should be able to get a distributor.

If we wanted to get funding for our film we would find a film funding association such as Microwave who can give the break to new directors trying to make a film.. Microwave would only grant you the funding if they think you’re film has potential. To do this you first send them a script of your film and once approved you receive funding from the company.

These are a few newer films that have been produced with support and funding from Microwave Film London:

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 5

To attract and address our audience we first put our remake on youtube to get some views.
We tried to attract our audience by making the credits interesting and not typical, i haven't seen many credit sequences that go into cartoon stills of that fixed image. I also think the music attracts the audience and makes them want to see more.

VALUATION ACTIVITY 6

I have learnt a lot about technologies from the process of making this video, such as how much work goes into shooting just one shot. For example all the story boards made for a 5minute shot then all the work that goes behind that.

During the process of creating the remake of Imonster i used many programs and a range of equipment.
To film it we used a tripod, camera and also took a few photograph while doing this for evidence.
I used garage band a lot at the start to create sounds and music for our credits, but then went to creative commons as they all sounded very typical garage band pieces.
I used final cut to edit the shots we took and photoshop to create the stills.
I also used youtube as a resource for idea's for our credits.

Above are a couple pictures of me holding an apple mac laptop that i went on to use the programs like final cut, and a camera and tripod that we used to shoot the video and keep the camera still.

Here is a screen grab from the process of editing our credit sequence on final cut.

EVALUATION TASK 7

I feel i learnt a lot from the preliminary task we shot we couple of months ago, especially shot types and rules when videoing. One of the main rules i learnt was  how to shoot the over the shoulder shot twice on the same side but over the other persons shoulder. This is called the 180 degree rule. This is when recording a conversation between two people and you have to imagine there is a line dividing them. We had to keep the camera on either the left or the right of the imaginary line to prevent the people looking like they'd  changed round. In our credit sequence we were in a very rare situation where we didn't have to keep to the 180 degree rule as we were only filming one person. One thing we did learn from it is making sure each scene we shot from different angles was shot with the same arm, position and had the same objects in.

I also learnt the match on action shot from doing the preliminary task.
We shot the match on action shot but in the end we didn't use it in our final credit video.
It was good as we still shot it incase we needed it, to shoot the match on action shot we got a close up of my hand on the door then me about to walk through the door, then changed the shot angle to me walking out the door on the other side, i think our footage of this was smooth but we had too much other footage to use it in our final credit video.

We shot each scene from three different angles in the green room. This gave us enough footage to edit. We shot quite a few different angles that we didn't use in the end such as the Point of View Shot and the Canted Angle Shot. I liked the over the shoulder shot from when Johnson was flicking through the pages of the book.
Two of my favourite scenes we shot were the ones of the bloody arm in the cupboard and the one of Johnson flicking the needle. I like these shot because it creates a sense that the film is going to be quite vicious at times. I also really enjoy the bit when Johnson is about to inject himself with the needle right before it turns into an edit cartoon still of that shot for the credits, i think that creates suspense. Another shot we filmed but didn't use was the 'match on action shot' i think this shot was smooth but unfortunately we had too much footage to fit it in. I remember spending a lot of time cutting our video down from 3minutes twenty! I think if we had planned a few less shots or missed a couple out our video would have flowed better as we would have been able to use the shots such as the P.O.V and match on action.
I shot i particularly enjoy is the tracking shot when right after Johnson flicks the needle. The camera tracks him slowly to when he sits back down.

I feel we had done a lot of planning for this and we also tried shooting our credit sequence in various locations, our first of which was a church, this looked really old fashioned and at the time we thought it wasn't modern day enough for our remake.
After this we shot it again but in my room, i think this worked quite well being modern day, but in the end we decided to shot it in the media room at college. There were a few rooms to choose from, i wanted the black room but the others wanted to shoot it in the green room so we started to film in the green room. I still feel the lighting was a bit odd for an office but the colour does make you think and it makes it very abstract.
I liked the edited stills i created in photoshop and i also think playing around with all the motion key frames on Final Cut worked well with giving it that trippy effect. I liked the motion key frame of the still when the edited image zooms into the bloody hand.

Deadline day analysis

So we have an hour left on deadline day and everything seems to be going roughly to plan.
I've been editing our video and adding all the cartoon credits, in the end we used a fade in and out to cross between the still images and the footage we took today. I used a tilting effect on one of the shots of the close up of the hand in the cupboard, i think this is a weird effect and makes me feel a bit sick but still looks good.
Here are some pictures we took during the shooting of the credits earlier.

Find Your Tribe 2

I decided to do it again to get a more accurate result, again i feel this tribe isn't exactly the tribe that would watch our remake.

Find your tribe

I researched for my target audience on 'find your tribe'. To do this i had to answer a series of questions answering each one as if i was the kind of person to watch our remake of Imonster.
I don't think the result i got was very accurate because I don't really see where money comes into our remake as yet...apart from of course the making and buying of the drugs.

Friday 3 December 2010

Deadline day

Today we shot the video footage we were meant to shoot yesterday,
it's deadline day so we have a lot of editing to do this afternoon.
Right now i am editing the still images for the credits on photoshop.

I have also found some songs on creative commons that i think will sound good to our finished video.
Here are a few links to them.
http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/11376

http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/78424
The song we could use from this one is 'In a Bar OCD'

http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/6684
I really like the song 'off the air' it's quite a deep peice of music but i think could give the effect that our film is quite sad, and not very witty.

http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/20858
I like the piano effect on track 9, and i think would give out a horror in a witty way as the piano is being played fast.

http://www.jamendo.com/en/album/38034
I like most of the effects they use in these songs, most of them i think could work in our video.

We will have to see when it has all been edited and finished to see what kind of music and sounds sound best. Now i am editing the video on final cut putting all the clips we shot today together.

Thursday 2 December 2010

Todays work

Today I have been putting together the 2minute clip of 'a tormented film' i made at the start of our credit opening, also i have been editing a lot of the still images on photoshop. The effects used are first 'cut out' then 'ink outlines' then the last effect used of the background of the still image is 'texturise'
I duplicated each layer then changed the name to the effect i had to make it easier for exporting to final cut separately.
I am still annoyed that we haven't done any video footage today after bringing everything and it being late in the project, but that's what you get if you work with other people.
I have also been downloading and exploring with abstract brushes today on the edited still images to give our credits that trippy effect.

Here is one of the stills from our shots i edited earlier.

Thursdays Imonster update

Today we are supposed to be re-shooting one or two of the scenes from last Friday, the scenes are we re-shooting is the close up of opening the cupboard door as when i opened it from the other shots i opened it with my left hand, but for the close up i opened it with my right hand.
This morning i got up early to find all the same props from last week, so the same candle, matches, cigorrette, i also downloaded the song Monster by the automatic last night on my Ipod so we could zoom in on that song and play it out the headphones. I made sure i was wearing the exact same clothes as when we shot last Friday as well so everything is the same.
Unfortunately nathan has not come in to film so we wont be able to film today unless he comes in later.
To make up for this i am going to get on finding music on creative commons and editing stills from the footage taken already for the credits.

Wednesday 1 December 2010

Horror Update

Today we decided to get our music from creative commons, Many musicians choose to release their songs under Creative Commons licences, which give you the legal right to do things like use their music in your videos.
We chose to do this because despite everyone in the group liking the music i made it all sounded like it was made on garage band, our favourite was a classical piece with hiphop drums over it to create a witty effect. Here is a sample of what i made.
Another big change in the plan is to create a more trippy look as Imonster is about injecting drugs and the effects it has. We plan on making most of our opening in animation. I think this will be great for the credit sequence. The reason we decided this was because we filmed it in the room with green walls instead of the room with black walls because there was more space in the green room. At the time i was against filming in the green room as i thought black would be more effective and less weird, but i was out voted.
