Research. Pop photo's

Many male pop artists like to pose topless in photo-shoots and video's, one of the most famous is Peter Andre's video 'Mysterious Girl'.
Justin Timberlake also likes to pose topless in photo's.
In the photo's i found of Justin Timberlake with clothes on he has a cheeky smile with smart clothing, tie, jeans and leather jacket. The ones of Justin Timberlake topless he has a puzzled more serious look on his face, they're set with a grey background, i think he is trying to appeal to ladies by posing topless giving them the 'sexy' look.
In this photo of Katy Perry, she is looking innocent, her lipstick doesn't stand out, she has a nice amount of make up on and she is wearing a pink dress. She isn't smiling which suggests her music will be about finding love. The font stands out as very girly with pink stars and hearts around the photo.

Research. Flyers

First when i was thinking of past flyers for pop music i thought of ones i had already seen before, i knew that Ellie Goulding had played cambridge a few times before so checked out her previous flyers from the promotion company SPC(Strange Place Club)
The first flyer was for when she played Portland Arms a while back before she released her hit songs.
It's quite a dull poster being black .. but also has a pop feel with the bright different colours over her name which i like and would include something like that when creating my pop flyer. The second flyer has a big picture of Ellie Goulding on, with a (14+) sign in the bottom corner which i like telling people there is an age limit for her show. I like that they have used their promotion company SPC right above Ellie Gouldings name, this shows they're trying to get the name of their promotion company out there even more.

I really enjoy the colours and feel of this flyer dispite there being no real information or artist on it. I get a real pop feel from the bright colours and shapes. The fact it has stereo speakers with a stencil of a lady and a man jumping tells us there is going to be music and perhaps lots of dancing and jumping about.
This is another flyer design i like which has similar colours to the last one.

I have been searching for 'Pop Clubs' and Pop Venues' in cambridge for a long time. First i thought of Cornexchange as i know many pop artists have played their in the past, yet they put on such a vierity of rock and indie acts as well. I then thought of another big venue in cambridge 'The Junction' It says they put on some pop artists yet when i looked at their upcoming shows it was only indie and rock bands with a couple folk artists. So i decided to look at the smaller more unknown clubs in Cambridgeshire. While looking at these clubs i came across a bigger club in cambridge called Ballare. The Ballare Club, also known as Cindies to the local students (after its previous name Cindarella's) is the place to go if you like cheesy dance music expects pop and 80s dance anthems. Ballare is highly popular through the week and at the time of writing had a number of theme nights: Monday: School Days
Tuesday: The Edge (CUSU)
Wednesday: Rumboogie
Thursday: Unite in delight (International Students night)
Friday: Hot
Saturday: Cool
After reading information like this i thought it was great to hold a pop night.
Here is some other information that i would have to include in my flyer. Contact Details

Pop research

Justin Bieber is a well know pop artist who has a very big female fan base. He has millions of fans and hits on Youtube. What makes him a pop artist? His music is all simple and catchie, this makes it easy listening and you start to think of more than just the music and into his style. In his music video's we see him going after girls and sticking to the usual pop video style. However in one video we see Usha joining the teen party, we now get a different view on him and he starts to bring the R&B genre into his music but mainly his videos. His style is very casual and simple in jeans in a hoodie, although he puts a twist on his style with hats going back to the R&B look. Pop itself doesn't have a fan base but the artists inside the genre has fans who like to share their news about the artists within the internet world. Using social media like Facebook and Myspace is a big sites to use for getting new listeners into your music.

Club nights and Gigs
It is unlikely to find a nightclub just doing pop songs, you might find a club doing Indie or RnB but because pop music is in most songs you hear it in a lot of places. They might not have themed pop nights but they might have an era of pop such as 80's pop nights. In the same way festivals specifically featuring pop artits do not exist, however they may appear as special guests at other festivals. T4 on the beach is now a huge gig for pop music. This gig came from channels 4's T4 morning programme which inculded the new up to date music. The people that go here are usually a group of  teenagers, male and famale, this gig is a day time gig in the summer. This gig has made such a hit they now have one in Novemeber called stars of 2011 which brings together all the new artists of the year. A local club in Newmarket called Deniros has a pop, party and cheese genre every Sunday night. The X-Factor do a tour which is mainly pop based, they tour the country in arenas.
Over all to make it in pop you need to be something different and stand out from the crowd. You need to know where the best gigs are for your target audience in the pop genre it's T4 on the beach. You need to have a good style, and something for your fans to have while you haven't got a new hit out such as a clothing range or make up range. For pop the music most of the time has to be up beat and fit a wide range of people. To get more people listening the music

Radio and TV stations
Pop songs are played on most well know stations. Radio 1 DJ's get given a list of songs which would fit their listeners. Chris Moyles plays the top charts, these inculde all pop songs and some R&B. I think this is because he is one DJ that gets most of the daily listeners and he trys to keep his audience open. Local Radio such as Heart Cambridge radio plays new music and old classic music usually being pop, however looking on the Heart website we don't see much about older music and it's all about artists such as JLS,The wanted, Olly Murs and Lady Gaga. This might be because younger people are more likely to be looking at their website than older people who might not have internet access.
Smash hits is a radio station but also a TV channel which every day plays the top 10 songs which always includes a type of pop. Their website for their TV channel is very brightly coloured in the same way pop music is portrayed. They are definately trying to hit a young audience because they have music videos playing out of a stylish mobile phone, their channel is to show music being played in a "jukebox" style, the channel is dominated by pop. Smash hits used to have a gig called Smash hits poll winners party which used to get shown on BBC 1 it was like an award ceremony. It then got moved to channel 4 to later be cancelled, it's last showing was in 2005.

Magazines & Fanzines
The pop genre comes across in lots of different magazines, because pop is such a big genre, it has a wide audience but mainly a big area in youth. For younger children their is magazines such as Pop Girl, Twist ( as seen below) and Girl. These are for the younger audience between 8-14. The artists in these magazines are mainly people like the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber. These artists all aim themselves towards young girls as they all have the same style of pop music. On the other hand for teenage market there are lots of magazines mostly for teenage girls there are magazines such as Sugar, More and Heat. The way pop comes across in these is less about the music and more about the artits and who they are dating and their style. The actual pop music starts to die out, there is only a small section on music at the back of the magazine talking about new albums and singles.

People make fan sites on an artist like Justin Bieber who has a a lot of fan sites. The main one that comes up on Google is about what he does in a day such as him going to Great Ormand Street Hospital. The site is all about him there is no connection to anyone else in the pop industry. They encourage male fans to look like him there is a competition to look like Justin. We learn a little about his love life and who he is rumoured to be with. Most artits have fan site but Justin has more than others. These fan sites usually get there information from pages such as Myspace, facebook and the artits Twitter page. These sites are created by fans for fans and may mean the information is not always accurate. However most artists do have an official fan page produced by their own people.
 Fashion
Fashion is a big part to the artits style and how they come across to their target audience their fashion style is a key part to whom they may appeal to. Lady Gaga for example dresses outrageously this might attract some fans but for some people her style might not appeal and therfore they will be put off her music. There are some certain looks to this genre for example Boy Bands dress to attract a female audience (revealing muscle tone). However they don't want to disregard male fans and dress in high street fashion to enable their look to be copied. The pop music industry has a wide target audience and their dress style needs to be tasteful and because this audience is young the artists are seen as role models. On a recent X Factor show an appearance by Christina Aguilera was seen to be inappropriate for this prime time TV audience due to her revealing outfit and dance moves. This has had a knock on effect to her appeal but had nothing to do with her music. Many female pop artists tend to bring out their own ranges in make-up and perfume, Pixie Lott has gone one step further by bringing out her own small clothing range. This is to promote themselves as a brand so even when they are not releasing a new single or album they are still in the public eye.

Research. Random Album Cover

This was the first name that came up on random wikipedia and i have to stick with it as my band name. Luc Mbah a Moute.

This is the random wikipedia page link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
Then i went to http://quotationspage.com/random.php3 and the last five ish words from the last quote had to be my album title, i got use your eyes, not your ears. Which i thought was actually quite a nice album title.

I then had to go to: http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/ on this link it was the third picture that had to be my album cover. I got a nice photo of a snowy field with the sun shining.

While making the album cover, i wanted to use a font that suited the name '

Luc Mbah a Moute.' So i searched for a long time trying to find the right font. I then found a font called 'Trajanus' which i thought worked well. The band name sounded like they might be from a warm country with latin like music, the picture i had was of snow...so i decided to use the effect 'Difuse Glow' which made the picture look a lot brighter.

This was the original image.

I tried lots of different styles with the title, not much would fit. I thought having the title go down the page from top to bottom would be a nice effect to add, but it didn't seem to look good with this album. In the end i just put it at the bottom of the album in smaller letters than the name of the band which is at the top of the album.

Research! Pop research!

Me and my group(scott and holly) worked together and researched pop music. This is information we have collected.

TV and Film in pop music

Popworld used to be a TV programme that was on Channel 4, offering pop news, trivia, gossip, interviews and music videos, as well as musical performances from the best top acts around.
The show began in January 2001 and was initially presented by Miquita Oliver and Simon Amstell. Alex Zane and Alexa Chung took over the programme in 2006. Popworld was on every Sunday Morning on Channel 4 at 10.30 am, and repeated on E4at 2.00 pm the next day.

Top of the Pops was a British music chart television programme, made by the BBC and broadcast weekly from 1 January 1964 to 30 July 2006. It was usually plaued every Thursday evening on BBC One, before being moved to Fridays in 1996, and then moved to Sundays on BBC Two in 2005. Each weekly programme had performances from some of that week's best-selling popular music artists, with a rundown of that week's singles chart. Additionally, every year there was a special edition of the programme on Christmas Day featuring some of the best-selling singles of the year.

Legally blonde use the song 'perfect day' by hoku their soundtrack, the song 'Perfect Day' is a very girly pop song!
There are many films and TV series that use pop artists as actors, such as the Disney channel with Hannah Montana, even new films that are pretty rubbish such as 'Fred The Movie' use Pixie Lott as one of the films main actors.

The Pop group S Club had their own TV series S Club 7 is the show of the band with the same name.

S Club 7 starts in Miami in the first season where the band searches a their chance to start a career. Without success they move to Los Angeles within the second season and stay there till the end of the third season. They always search for a music contract to become the big "music stars".
Meanwhile they have to get jobs and face the common teenage drama, like broken hearts and other disappointments.
In the last season the band moves to Barcelona, Spain has a major break up, so they rename the band to S Club, because one member leaves the band.

Britney Spears has her film Crossroads, released in 2002 Three childhood best friends, and a guy they just met, take a trip across the country, finding themselves and their friendship in the process.
In this movie there are other famous pop artists music such as 'Open your heart' by Madonna and 'Man i Feel like a women' by Shania Twian, and of course there are all the old Britney classics such as 'I'm
not a girl, Not yet a women'  The film crossroads was directed at all pop fans and more directly fans of Britney Spears herself.

Pop idol and X factor represent artists who want to become Pop stars, through X factor mainstream
pop artists such as JLS, Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke have been formed.
Top-Earning Musicians list of 2010 has just named Britney Spears as the fifth highest earner over the past 12 months, raking in £41.8m.So it’s no surprise that the pop star likes to go on shopping spree's. Many female pop artists like to go shopping for new accessories with their mountains of money.

Early in 1999, Justin Timberlake began what then became a high-profile celebrity relationship with fellow pop singer Britney Spears, they both worked at the New Mickey Mouse Club
Timberlake also dated actress Cameron Diaz soon after they met at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards in April 2003.

Justin Timberlake has also been active in several charitable pursuits, initially through 'N Sync's "Challenge for the Children" aimed at a range of charities, and since 2001 through his "Justin Timberlake Foundation," which initially funded music education programs in schools, but now covers more area's.

On November 12, 2007, the PGA Tour announced that Justin Timberlake, would become the host of the tour's Las Vegas tournament starting in 2008. With Timberlake's agreement to host the tournament, its name was changed to the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. I've found out that many pop artists play golf and help with charities!
Timberlake hosted Saturday Night Live, doing double duty as both host and musical guest for the second time.

Rod Stewart, the British singer and songwriter, was exposed by the science editor of the U.K. Daily Mail newspaper for his favourite pastime - he loves to build model railways. Stewart created a spectacular replica of New York's Grand Central Station, complete with 100 feet of track as well as buildings and figures in 1940s period attire. The impressive layout appeared on the cover of a 2007 issue of Model Railroader and Stewart called it and honour that meant more to him than doing the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

Will Smith, actor and musician, loves to play chess. He spoke of his love for the game in an interview with the U.K. newspaper the Independent, "It is cool to play chess. My father taught me how to play chess at seven and introduced beautiful concepts that I try to pass on to my kids. The elements and concepts of life are so perfectly illustrated on a chess board. The ability to accurately assess your position is the key to chess, which I also think is the key to life." Pop star Ricky Martin goes skydiving in his free time. As he said in an interview with People magazine, "It's the closest thing to flying; you have the sensation that you own the world." In 2009, the Sunday Times Rich List claimed that Robbie Williams was worth over £130 million.

Williams is a lifelong supporter of Port Vale, based in his home town of Stoke-on-Trent. In February 2006 he bought £240,000 worth of shares in the club, making him the majority shareholder. He also has a restaurant at Vale Park named in his honour.

Williams has set up a charity in his home town entitled Give It Sum, with its goal being to "improve local conditions and strengthen community life by giving money to those who are disadvantaged. Robbie is yet another pop star helping in charity!
Robbie Williams features in his own karaoke video game, "We Sing Robbie Williams." It will feature 25 tracks accompanied by all the original videos. The game is to be released by publisher Nordic Games, which struck a licensing deal with the record label EMI.

One of his most famous collaborations was on the song "Kids", a duet with Australian pop star Kylie Minogue
So pop stars are rich, famous and live glamorous lifestyles.
In The Madonna Companion, biographers Allen Metz and Carol Benson noted that more than any other recent pop artist, Madonna had used MTV and music videos to establish her popularity and enhance her recorded work. According to them, many of her songs have the imagery of the music video in strong context, while referring to the music.
I read in Rolling Stone magazine that, Madonna "remains one of the greatest pop acts of all time". I also found out she has achieved multiple Guinness World Records, including world's top-selling female recording artist and the most successful female recording artist of all time.
Pop sub genre origins

Pop sub genre origins
Pop has so many different sub genre's and so many genre's that it can goe into. One being R&B here is some information i found on the origin of R&B music.

I already knew R&B had came from the roots of jazz, soul and blues.
R&B, or rhythm and blues, came together during the postwar period. It was made popular by African-Americans. R&B has been interpreted in different ways, one simple definition cannot cover the vast range of music that is included in R&B. Music throughout the second half of the twentieth century was influenced heavily by R&B, and music today continues to feel R&B's influence.

Although the abbreviation “R&B” comes from traditional rhythm and blues music, today the term R&B is most often used to describe a style of popular African American music. Some sources refer to the style as urban contemporary.
Through research on google i found that Louis Jordan was a jazz artist but his style changed into r&b as it became more popular.

Contemporary R&B has a polished record production style, drum machine-backed rhythms, an occasional saxophone-laced beat to give a jazz feel (mostly common in contemporary R&B songs prior to the year 1993), and a smooth, nice style of vocal arrangement. Electronic influences are becoming an increasingly popular, and the use of hip hop or dance inspired beats are now normal, although the roughness and grit inherent in hip hop may be reduced and smoothed out.

Michael Jackson and Prince were among the first post-disco black musicians to cross over to mainstream audiences. In its early years, mainstream R&B was very pop-oriented. The popularity of neo soul continues into the 21st century. Prominent 2000s neo soul artists include Alicia Keys,

By the 2000s, the cross between R&B and hip hop had increased with more and more collaberations between hip hop and R&B artists. R&B began to focus more on solo artists rather than groups as the 2000s progressed. Some of the most prominent R&B musicians today include artists such as Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, R. Kelly, Usher, Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Alexandra Burke As the 2010s approaches, R&B music begins to revert back to more traditional elements along with an emerging hybrid with dance and electronica music that is popular in the current decade.

I think R&B has become popular because it has the rhythm and attitude of hiphop without all the misogyny and violence.

Pop music Is a term that originally came from an abbreviation of popular. Pop music is usually understood to be commercially recorded music, often directed at the youth audience. Pop music has absorbed influences from most other forms of 'popular music' and genre's such as rock, r&b, hip hop and jazz.

The term "pop song," was first recorded as being used in 1926 in the sense of a piece of music "having a popular appeal"
Early pop music drew on the sentimental ballad for its form, gained its use of vocal harmonies from gospel and soul music, instrumentation from jazzcountry, and rock music, orchestration from classical music, tempo from dance music, backing from electronic music, rhythmic elements from hip-hop music, and has recently appropriated spoken passages from rap.

By the early 1980s, the promotion of pop music had been greatly affected by the rise of Music Television channels like MTV, which "favoured those artists such as Michael JacksonMadonna, and Prince who had a strong visual appeal".

Pop music has now entered into the 21st century with no end in sight to its commercial appeal, cultural impact, longevity, or profitability. With each generation, Pop music will always be that arbiter of taste and refinement in that it accurately--for good or bad--reflects all that that society has to offer. To paraphrase another musical saying, "POP music is here to stay".

Pop is the abbreviation of the phrase popular music. It originated after the World War II when the recording system came out of the hands of the few and could be utilised by the common people. It was categorized as a particular category as late as in 1994. The style of pop music originated from jazz, rock and roll, folk and traditional popular music. There are many famous artists who have ruled the world with pop music. In the present days we have great artists like Madonna, Shania Twain, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and The Spicegirls. Recently we have new pop artists such as Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Ellie Goulding who all have Sub genres in their music, I.E Justin Beiber has an R&B influence in his music. Teenagers tend to get their style of dress from musicians that they like. Singers and songwriters have always set the tone for fashion trends. The music and fashion industry have become so intertwined that recording artists are now using their fame to sell their own fashion line of clothing.

Major labels of pop music

Many large pop bands and well known artists in the music industry often get their work to the public through record labels. The record labels are in charge of manufacturing, promoting and distributing the work of artists. Many artists become associated with different music labels, so much so that consumers may buy music based on who the label is, as similar pop artists may go to the same label. Big record label companies normally have at least one big name artist, these are essentially 'cash cows' where these companoes can invest in to make massive profits due to the artists' popularity. More often than not, it is small indie companies and artists who create innovative work and inspire other artists. When these indie groups and artists become more popular, they may be bought by other companies for example, Sony bought BMG music.
Universal Music Group is the largest music label of the main four. They account for 25.5% of the market and contain the following music label imprints; Geffen, Interscope, Island, Mowtown and Universal. Their key pop artists are; Black eyed peas, 50 Cent, Kayne West, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani.

Sony BMG Music Entertainment is the second largest record label in the market and account for roughly 21.5% of the market (as of 2005), their well known music label imprints are Epic, Arista, Columbia, Jive, J, and RCA. Their major pop artists include; Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, Outkast, Shakira and Britney Spears.

EMI Group is the third largest music record label company, their market share is around 13.4%. Major imprints include; Astralwerks, Capitol, EMI, Mute, and Virgin. Major pop artists who work for EMI include The Beatles, Coldplay, Gorillaz, Rolling Stones and Robbie Williams.

Warner Music Group is the fourth largest record label with a market share of 11.3%. Big label imprints include; Lava, Asylum, Reprise, Atlantic, Rhino, and Warner Bros. Warner's big name pop music artists are; My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Alanis Morissette, Madonna and Rob Thomas

Pop music communities

Pop music is a global phenomenon and is such a large and vague subject of music that it has a lot of deviations and lots of different communities. Pop music is enjoyed by a very large audience. Individual pop artists to entire pop sub-genres may have their own communities and online forums where they may have discussion on various relevant topics. For example, many music forums may have general pop music forums to discuss anything that the pop genre covers such as muzicforums.com/pop/

A lot of discussion on pop music and pop artists arise from social networking sites. A good example of this would be myspace.com which has a lot of community created pages (and offical pages) for artists and bands. Facebook also has a pages system where bands can create their own official pages or fans can create their own unofficial pages.
